Freedom Of Movement Between Britain And Australia Eyed By United Kingdom Gov’t, Potential Immigrants Looking Forward To Positive Results

The United Kingdom has long been planning on making its exit from the European Union. Aside from that, the country’s government has also been working on plans and policies that would be put in place once the exit happens. One of the main topics that they are focusing on at present would be immigration since the exit would mean that there would be a lot fewer immigrants coming to the country given that there would be no more free movement between the UK and all other European Union member nations.

Despite the end of the free movement between the United Kingdom and members of the European Union, the government of the country is looking at other potential countries that they can have a deal with. They are currently eyeing Australia as a country that they can work with and allow people between their countries to have free movement. This is as per a recent announcement made by Liz Truss, the current UK secretary for international trade.

Trade deal with Australia is a priority

Truss recently went to Australia and she announced to journalists in the country’s capital that the move towards having a trade deal with Australia is a priority for the United Kingdom right now. It would be in place once the exit happens. The government is working on this trade deal as soon as possible because the talk and negotiations and arrangements would not happen overnight. In fact, Truss disclosed that an agreement would potentially happen in years given the ins and outs of the deal that have to be discussed and finalized.

As per the proposal, the trade deal would allow the citizens of the United Kingdom to move and be immigrants in Australia without the need for any visa. They would also be able to work in Australia without a visa. The citizens of Australia would be able to do the same in the UK. It would basically be like how the whole thing works for the citizens of EU member nations. These conditions are all part of the talks on the trade deal.

Going with a points system

Truss continued to share that the United Kingdom is open for discussion on the kind of system that they would be using in case the trade deal pushes through. Truss disclosed that there will be a points system which would be adopted from what Australia uses. This announcement came after the country has announced that it would be giving an extension for immigrant students to stay in the UK even after they have graduated from their program. The students can stay for an additional two years. This would allow the students to try and get work experience in the country and share what they have learned from studying in the UK.
