Immigrants In New Zealand Step Up To Do The Jobs That The Locals Couldn’t Or Wouldn’t Do

There are thousands and thousands of immigrants who have successfully made their way to New Zealand and has called the country their new home. They have moved to the country for a variety of reasons including the chance to live in a place that has greener pastures. The country has been a very popular country of choice for many people who are looking for a new country to call their home.

In recent years, thousands of immigrants who are in New Zealand have been awarded temporary work visas. This was to help the country get the needed workers to do the jobs that many locals of the country do not like to do or do not have the capacity to do. Unemployment in the country has been going up in recent times and the last time that the numbers have gone up this high was back in the 1980s. With the tons of jobs that need to be done, the government had to find a solution and that is to award temporary work visas to immigrants to get the jobs done.

The numbers tell the story

As per the official numbers from the government of the country, starting March 19th until September 30th this year, there were over 18,000 new applications that were received by Immigration New Zealand. These applications were for the essential skills category. March 19th was when New Zealand had closed its borders as a way of helping stop or lessen the number of cases of COVID-19, which has been the cause of a global pandemic.

The data also showed that the agency had given approval to around 15,000 applications under the essential skills category and granted these individuals work visas. However, around 1500 were not approved, and this number includes those applications that the agency had received prior to March 19th. The approved ones included around 630 applications for various jobs that ranged from roles that needed low skills like taxi drivers, cleaners, and café workers; to jobs that needed high skills like chemical engineers, pediatricians, and aircraft engineers.

Recognizing the need for immigrants

Business owners in New Zealand have shared that when the lockdown happened in their country, it was when they have really felt the need for immigrants to help out with the jobs that need to be done. Despite sending out word that there were vacancies, some owners got few to no applications. There were also lesser immigrant workers in the country. The whole scenario made things a bit difficult for business owners. It was a good thing that there were still immigrant workers in the country who were willing to step up and do the jobs that need to be done.
