A Guide For Immigrants On Some Of The Common Traits Of The Locals Of The United Kingdom

When living in a new country as an immigrant, it is highly recommended that a person tries their best to learn about the common traits that the locals have. One does not really have to do a lot of research to do this. Quick guides like this one can help a lot, so they would have an inkling of how the locals act and behave. That way, they would not be surprised if the locals do something that immigrants are not used to seeing. In the case of the United Kingdom, there are certain traits that the locals have that immigrants should be aware of.

Some of these traits are really not that mind-boggling or surprising but it is best that one is familiar with them. It would help them adapt better to the new life that they would be living in. It would also be a great guide to know how to act and behave in the country. Here are some of these common traits.

Greeting family or friends

While saying “Hi” or “Hello” is enough to greet other people in some countries, in the case of the United Kingdom, when one has to greet family or friends, these greetings are not enough. Shaking hands is also too formal. Usually, when greeting family or friends, one would give them a small kiss on their cheeks. This is the usual behavior, most especially if the person is a female.

On the other hand, when greeting other people who do not belong to the friends or family categories, touching the other person can be uncomfortable or can be seen as odd. A handshake is fine. But in most cases, giving the other person a smile or a quick bow of the head is good enough. This is seen as polite enough.

Respecting the elderly and the disabled

One amazing thing about the British is that they really give high respect to the elderly and the disabled. That is why immigrants in the UK should know that when people are on public transportation, one is expected to stand up and give up their seat to another person who may be disabled or who may be older than them. This is done when there are no other seats available on public transport.

In case an elderly person or a disabled person is having a hard time with something, perhaps carrying stuff or getting onto public transport, one is expected to first ask the person if they need help. And should they say that they do, one should go ahead and help them. It is really best to ask first because some people may find it offensive if another person helps them out without their permission.
