Getting to a new town in your own country can be a difficult
thing as you have to adjust and change with what is happening in that town.
However, to actually move to another country is definitely even more difficult
as the rules, people, language, and culture can be even far more different than
the place that you grew up in.
If you are an immigrant in Canada, you would be one of the
lucky ones. The good thing about being able to be a resident of Canada is that
you are subject to a good type of effect which a recent study has confirmed and
concluded. This is known as the health immigrant effect and many immigrants to
the country are happy about it.
The study and what it
says
A study was recently concluded. This study was spearheaded
by the University of Toronto as well as the Institute for Clinical Evaluative
Sciences. These two groups looked at the immigrants in Canada for their study.
The study focused on mortality rates. They used people’s
immigration status and socioeconomic status for this. The numbers showed that
the immigrations have a 60% lesser chance of dying as compared to other
Canadians born in the country or other Ontario residents who have been living
in the country for a long period of time. This shows that the immigrants enjoy
a lower death rate as compared to those who are not. The study also disclosed
that it does not matter if the immigrants are living even in the areas that are
most destitute.
A look at death rate
What is the mortality rate? Mortality rate is also known as
the death rate. It is a way of measuring the deaths in a certain population.
Usually, it is computed by adding all deaths for each 1000 individuals. This is
computed through a certain timeframe.
With this in mind, the immigrants had a lower rate as
compared to the non-immigrants. The study’s numbers were from the years 2002 to
2012.
Laura Rosella is one of the authors of the study. She is the
lead person for this. She works as an epidemiologist at the University of
Toronto. The study that they had worked on was published in a health journal on
community health. She stated that they were actually surprised by the huge
difference in mortality rates between immigrants and non-immigrants. The
difference is definitely something important as it is quite huge.
The study had worked on the death rates among various
socioeconomic classes that the immigrants were part of. They looked at the same
classes for Canadians who are born in the country as well as Canadians who have
been residents for a long time in the country and have gone there before 1985.
They took information from databases that looked at different population types
as well as demographics. They also made use of death data from the Registrar
General of Ontario.
