The growth of the population in New Zealand is going up and
that is thanks in part to immigrants. That is according to the latest numbers
and analysis given by Statistics NZ, the official agency of the country that
works with data, numbers, and such. The agency has also shown that as per their
records, there was an increase in population that came from immigration
totaling to 55,613 individuals for the year that ended in October 2019. This
number is up by 10.8% as compared to the year before that. This increase is the
highest one recorded for a period of 12 months. The last time that it peaked
was in 2016.
The experts from Statistics NZ have also shared that the
gain in the population would have even become higher if the country did not
experience a significant amount of people leaving the country for a variety of
reasons. There are citizens leaving the country to work in other countries. And
there are also immigrants in the country who have left New Zealand since their
visas have already expired.
The movement in and out of New Zealand
For the year that ended in October 2019, there was a total
of 45,513 citizens of New Zealand who have left the country for the long term. However,
despite this, there were 33,842 citizens of the country who have gone back to
the country after staying in other countries for a long time.
As per the individuals who have come to the country as
immigrants, the country with the most number of people arriving in New Zealand
was South Africa, with a total of 10,235 for the given period. China and Hong
Kong came next with a total of 8860. India followed suit with 7941 immigrants
in total. The Philippines had 7034 and Australia came contributing 5140
immigrants. This is just for the year that ended in October. The number of
immigrants coming to New Zealand is still high and they contribute a lot to
the population and to the workforce of the country.
Looking at the numbers
For the year that ended in October, the total was 148,420 of
immigrants who arrived in New Zealand. They would be staying in the country for the long term. As per Statistics NZ, this is the biggest number that the country
has been able to record since the agency was started in 2002 to collect and
analyze data in the present format that they are using. The agency has also
disclosed that the arrivals of individuals in the country holding visitor visas
and work visas have been a record high for this period. There were 33,301
individuals who had work visas and 31,475 individuals who came with visitor
visas that were for the long term.
