Rules For Work Visas Relaxed During The Lockdown In New Zealand

The government of New Zealand has relaxed the rules for work visas in the country during the current lockdown. This is to ensure that the businesses in the country would be able to tap into immigrant laborers and help them out during this difficult period. With this change, it also means that a number of immigrants in the country can already start working in the country and they would not have been allowed to do so before the rules have become a bit lenient.

Workers who are in the industries of health, aged care, and supermarkets have been allowed by the New Zealand government to have a change in their roles or in their hours. This is a good change in the sense that with the lockdown and a lot of people not being able to work, the immigrants who are now qualified because of the changes can go and start working in the country. With the need for more people to man the frontlines, the leniency of the work visa rules is going to be very helpful.

Benefiting from the relaxed visa rules

Immigrants in New Zealand as well as employers in the country have already been informed about the changes to the work visa rules. Immigration New Zealand has informed them that aside from those people who are working in the industries mentioned previously, the changes would also affect those who would be working in important sectors in the country. These sectors include the providers of utilities, financial services, accommodation, construction, and education.

Immigration New Zealand has also disclosed that the changes to the work visa rules would also be including the following:
  • An employee who has a student visa and would like to work full-time for their employer.
  • Any employee who has a work visa that is specific for a certain employer and would like to work for that very same employer with a different occupation.
  • Any employee who has a work visa and would like to work for a new employer with the same occupation that they currently hold. The new employer should be located in the very same region as the previous one.
  • Any staff who are work visa holders to work for a different employer in the same region in the same occupation as they are currently employed.

The goal

When New Zealand goes on Alert Level 2 in their lockdown, Immigration New Zealand has said that the changes that they have done will be extended to an additional six weeks. The INZ has also said that the timeframe is short for employers to be able to keep the needed number of employees up and hiring new people can be quite difficult, thus the need for such changes.
