Language may be something that not a lot of people really quite give a lot of attention to because it is something that they use on a daily basis and comes naturally to them. However, it becomes a big deal when people do not understand the other person that they are talking to. A good example of this would be people who may have become immigrants in a new country like the United Kingdom. English is the language spoken mostly in this country but there are certain slang used here that make things a bit difficult for newcomers.
What are these slang? Here are some of the commonly used
ones that immigrants in the UK may want to learn so they can easily communicate
and understand the locals.
Scrummy
When something is described to be ‘scrummy’, it does not
mean that it is like scum or dirty. In fact, it is the complete opposite. Scrummy
actually means that it is tasty and very delicious.
Dennis really didn’t like apple pie even though he hadn’t
tasted any before. But when he finally did, he realized he missed out a lot
because apple pie is scrummy.
Skive
In the United Kingdom, when someone is asked to skive, it usually
pertains to playing hooky or skipping work or class and fervently wishing that
they do not get caught while doing so.
The sun shone finally after weeks of dark gray skies and
Melinda was in the mood to skive off school. As a teacher, she knew her
students would be really happy to enjoy the sun as well with her, not at work.
Sloshed
The term ‘sloshed’ does not have anything to do with getting
wet or splashing or any sort. In fact, in the UK, this term is used to say that
someone is really drunk, trashed, or plastered from all the alcohol intake.
Serena does not drink that often and when she did while
attending PJ’s party, she was sloshed in a matter of two glasses of beer.
Smarmy
The term ‘smarmy’ is usually used to describe a person, and
it usually is a male. This male is too smooth that it does not come across as a
good trait and is not charming at all. He is sweet but it is too much that
people are just repulsed by such.
Antonio was being smarmy with the new girl and it only
made her want to stay as far away from him as possible.
Snog
What is a snog? In the UK, a snog is actually a kiss.
I wasn’t expecting to see anyone when I went out to get
some fresh air but was surprised to see the nerd and the cheerleader caught in
a snog.
