When the pandemic hit, the world seemed to think that everything just stopped. Things were not happening and people had to stay at home. Lockdowns were imposed and border control became a huge thing, especially to New Zealand. This country made sure that only essential travel was allowed. This meant that only specific individuals can cross their borders. Immigrants had to put their plans of moving to the country on pause for the meantime.
This may seem harsh but the truth is, New Zealand is one of
the proactive countries when it came to handling the pandemic. Now, the country
is seemingly back on its feet and the restrictions have become a lot lenient. Its
borders still remain closed but it does look like there is a silver lining next
year as the country may soon be opening its doors once again, especially for
immigrant students. This is definitely good news as it means that those who
have been planning on studying in the country can do so soon enough.
Opening its doors for immigrant students once again
A recent announcement from the government of New Zealand has
brought a lot of smiles on many immigrant students’ faces. As per the announcement,
the country will be opening its doors to immigrant students once again. However,
it is important to keep in mind that not all immigrant students will be allowed
in the country. The government of New Zealand said that it would only be allowing
1,000 immigrant students and these students would be selected. The earliest
that these immigrant students would be entering New Zealand would be in the
early part of 2022.
This is actually an exemption as the borders would only be
open for these select 1,000 immigrant students. This group would be made up of 400
pilot trainees, some 300 students who are taking a degree or a level above
that, and 300 immigrant students who would be taking a sub-degree level. Educational
institutions in New Zealand would be the ones to nominate students and they
have started sending in their nominations since October.
The path towards becoming an immigrant student
All of the chosen immigrant students can expect their visas
to be processed starting January 2022. This first batch would then be able to
enter New Zealand starting in March as per the government’s plans. It is
important though that they are fully vaccinated by the three vaccines that the
country has approved for use which are Janssen, AstraZeneca, and
Pfizer/BioNTech. However, the country will also allow those who may have been vaccinated
by other COVID-19 vaccines.
This is just the start of the plans of New Zealand when it
comes to reopening its borders. It may seem like a simple step but it is a step
towards reconnecting New Zealand to the rest of the world.
