How people behave in a country is one thing that immigrants should be aware of. As they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. And in the case of immigrants who have chosen to live in Canada, they should also be able to learn how to do things like the Canadians do. It would be best to know how the locals behave so that immigrants would not have to stick out like a sore thumb. It would also help them not do anything that could cause them or anyone else trouble.
There are many common etiquettes practiced in Canada. Those
who are in Canada should be aware of them, especially the most common ones. After
all, they would be interacting with the locals and would be doing things with
them. Here are some of them.
Calling a waiter
When someone wants to get the attention of the waiter or
someone doing service, it is best not to yell to call them or wave. The best
thing to do would be to look for them and then make eye contact. When one is
able to do so, nodding or raising one’s hand would be the best way to tell them
that they are needed at the table. If they pass by, one can also politely tell
them, “Excuse me” to get their attention and tell them what is needed from
them.
Clearing one’s throat
While there may be people who feel like it is necessary to
clear their throat, immigrants should be aware that in Canada, doing this can
be seen by the locals as an antagonizing act. With that, it would be best not
to avoid doing this, especially in public.
Yelling and strong outbursts
There may be places in the world where yelling in public as
well as showing strong outbursts because of emotions are not good things to do.
These are seen as inappropriate by the locals and should be avoided as much as
possible.
Speaking with a full mouth
When one speaks with a mouth filled with food, it is
considered to be rude behavior. Immigrants in Canada should know that this is
inappropriate and should not be done. This can be quite easy to do for many
immigrants since it is not only Canada that promotes such etiquette.
Queueing at the ATM
The lines at the ATM can be quite long. When someone is standing
in line and the person in front of them is already transacting at the ATM, the polite
thing to do would be to look away from them, most especially when they are
already putting in their PIN. This is the best thing to do as it gives them the
privacy to transact without someone looking over their shoulder.
