435,000 Job Vacancies In Canada For First Quarter Of 2019

In all of Canada, there have been a lot of job vacancies just for the first quarter of 2019. Among these, the top three provinces that had the most number of vacancies are Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia. These provinces took the largest hit when it came to vacancy rates.

According to the official data from the government, the number of vacancies in the private sector of the country has actually hit a record high. This is for the number that has been recorded during the first quarter of this year. In a report from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, the highest number of jobs that are still not filled has been recorded in Quebec.

The CFIB has continued to report that for the first three months of 2019, there has been a total of 435,000 jobs that still are vacant. This is not just for Quebec but for the entire private sector in Canada. This can be converted to a vacancy rate that amounts to 3.3%.

The trend in vacancies

Ted Mallet works as the vice president of the CFIB, where he also is the chief economist. According to him, the trend in vacancies in Canada has shown that it has been climbing at a steady pace and this has been happening for the last two years. The highest peak of the vacancies was reached from January to March 2019. This is a new record, as per Mallet.

The CFIB has also disclosed in its report that the shortage in the labor market actually has been affecting those with skilled positions. Aside from that, the shortage of workers also has been affecting the wage levels in the country. This happens when there are businesses and employers which have more than one vacant position and those who are working in the business or company have to do more than they usually do to make up for the lack of employees. Those who have been carrying the additional work have mentioned that they were expecting to get a raise in their salaries because of the additional work that they are doing.

Slower than 2018

The CFIB has also continued to share that the vacancy rate in Canada has actually slowed down as compared to the movement last year. However, despite this, businesses and employers are still having difficulties with running their business because they do not have enough employees to do the jobs that need to be done. This is why the government has been working on programs and pathways that would allow these employers to find the right skilled workers from outside the country. The processing of the visas would be faster as compared to usual times so as to bring the needed skilled immigrants to the country as fast as possible.
