Cracking The Language Code: Important Slang In The United States Of America For Immigrants

Moving to a new country can be a daunting experience, especially for immigrants who have to deal with language differences, cultural differences, and other challenges in the new country that they have chosen to call home. For those who have chosen the United States of America, one aspect of language that can be particularly difficult to navigate is the use of slang. Slang is used in everyday conversation, but these terms or phrases are not usually taught in English language classes. These immigrants should understand slang in order to communicate effectively with the locals. By mastering American slang, immigrants can feel more confident and comfortable in the country.

It is a good thing that there are plenty of resources online where people can get help understanding the slang used in the USA. Read on and learn about some of the common slang used in the country.

Airhead

This is definitely not someone or something that has a head that is literally full of air. This slang is actually used to refer to a person who may be silly or foolish.

Ricky could not believe how Clarissa was behaving after having a bottle of beer. She was acting like an airhead. She must not be used to drinking alcohol.

Cringe

Cringe is normally a word that is used as a verb. However, in slang in the USA, it is used as an adjective, and it means that something is really embarrassing.

When Melinda went out today, she stepped on some dog poop, and while she was trying to get it off, she lost her balance and fell on the ground. And to make things worse, the man that she was attracted to saw everything. Cringe.

Copium

This slang is actually a combination of two words – cope and opium – and rightly so. It is actually used to mean a fake drug that people use to help people deal with any loss or failure they may have experienced or are experiencing.

I think Xander needs some copium. Losing his job and then losing his mother in just one week is definitely taking a toll on him.

Simp

In the USA, ‘simp’ is slang used to refer to someone who is doing too much for the person that they like.

Judy cannot help but notice how much her brother is simping on her best friend. She’s just afraid that if they become an item and things don’t work out, she would be in the middle of a great war between her brother and her best friend.

Cram

This slang is used to refer to the act of studying like crazy, usually right before exams.

Claudia is cramming. She had attended many parties this week and neglected to study for her big exams.
