New Zealand has been a popular choice for many potential immigrants for the past years. In fact, many people from around the world choose the country as their new home for a variety of reasons. Some choose New Zealand to be the country they would grow their roots in. For others, it is a country where they would be working or taking their studies. With that, New Zealand has one of the highest rates of immigration per capita in the entire world.
The government of the country is working hard to ensure that
it is able to attract more skilled immigrants, since the country needs more
workers to help fill up shortages in the labor market. It is not surprising to
find many potential immigrants becoming quite interested in moving to New
Zealand to offer their skills and knowledge to the various industries that need
them. And recently, the government has added 32 more healthcare roles to help
address the shortages in the healthcare industry.
What the government is doing
The National Party is quite supportive of this move from the
government. However, it has also stated that this is something that should have
been done many years ago. The changes to the immigration list in New Zealand are
actually a good thing because it would mean that many skilled immigrant workers
would have higher chances of being able to move to the country and would also
be having a faster path toward becoming a resident of New Zealand. This list is
known as the Green List, and it includes a number of skills and professions
that are in high demand in the country.
This new tweak in immigration in New Zealand has been
announced recently by Michael Wood, the Immigration Minister, and Dr. Ayesha
Verrall, the Health Minister. In their joint statement, they mentioned that the
immigration settings in the country should be competitive with its offer. That
way, it would be able to successfully attract and bring in the needed
healthcare workers to the country. The statement also disclosed that this move
is a reflection of how the government listens to the sectors and does what it
can do to help out.
The changes made
There are some groups that are okay with this move but there
are also some who have reservations. For them, they believe that the government
should not just have a band-aid solution. Immigrant workers in the healthcare
industry are elated though with this change in the immigration settings in New Zealand. It means that they would have a bigger chance of moving to the
country. Some of the new roles included in the Green List include addiction
practitioners, chiropractors, clinical dental technicians, counselors,
dentists, dieticians, and nurses.
