Speak The Slang: A Guide For Immigrants On Learning Some Of The Lingo Used In Canada

Many immigrants make their way to Canada each year, given just how welcoming the country is to newcomers. Those who chose to move to the country as immigrants enjoy things like the different opportunities for them to grow and learn. Yes, learning is a very important thing, especially for those who are living in a new country like Canada that has a new environment and culture than the one that they have gotten used to. It is the best way to understand the locals and the place that one is living in. Learning is the best way to successfully integrate into society and in life.

There are many things that a new immigrant in Canada should learn. The list includes knowing where the best and most affordable food is, how to get in and around the place, and know what the locals do during their spare time. Immigrants should also learn how to speak the local lingo so they would be able to properly interact with the locals. Yes, slang is important to learn since this is used in daily conversations. Here is some slang that immigrants in Canada should be familiar with.

Canuck

The slang “Canuck” is used to refer to a person who is from Canada. It is the informal way of referring to Canadians. It is also used as the nickname of Vancouver’s pro hockey team.

I met a friendly Canuck and he gave me a long list of places to visit in Vancouver.

Chirping

While many people may think that the term “chirping” is the sound that a bird makes, in Canadian slang, it is actually used to refer to making fun of the other team or another player during a competition. It is also used to refer to trash-talking the opponent during a game.

During the hockey game, the players were constantly chirping each other. They were simply trying to psych out their opponents.

Clicks

A click may be a sound that something makes. However, in slang used in Canada, it is used to mean “kilometers”.

It's only a few clicks from here to the nearest Tim Hortons. I’m sure you can get your coffee and be back in no time at all.

Cowtown

Cowtown is not a place that one may encounter while watching an animated cartoon show. In Canada, it is actually slang for the city of Calgary. This slang is used to refer to the city because Calgary is known for having an Old Western heritage. It is also home to the Calgary Stampede, which is famous all around the world. The Calgary Stampede is a rodeo held yearly.

I'm planning a trip to Cowtown next month. I already have a list of things I want to do but the main reason for the trip is to experience the famous Calgary Stampede.
