Canadians now would start having a new design on their passports. This is as per Sean Fraser, the minister for Immigration of Canada, and Karina Gould, the minister for Families, Children, and Social Development. This means that Canadians who be applying or renewing their passports would soon be receiving a passport that has a different design.
According to the government, redesigning the passport has
been in the works since 2013. It is a process that the government does
regularly so as to ensure that Canadian passports cannot be easily copied and
counterfeited. Redesigning the passport also ensures that the government would be
able to add more modernized features that are for security purposes.
What’s changed in the new passport?
The new Canadian passport now has additional securities that
have been designed to ensure that the identities of holders are safe. Fraser
has also disclosed that the passport will be having a data page that is made
using polycarbonate. Aside from that, the personal information in the passport
will be engraved using a laser. This is a significant difference from the old
passports of Canada where ink is used to print out the information.
These new changes have been added to ensure that
information on the passport is actually made to be more durable. These are also
there to make sure that it is more resistant to any kind of counterfeiting and
tampering.
Fraser has also added that the new passport would have a
see-through window that is customized, and it would have a secondary image of
the holder of the passport. It would also come with a laser image that is
variable, and an ink feature that is sensitive to temperature.
How does it look?
Fraser continued that the new passport of Canada would be
showing off the natural heritage of the country. To get to the final design,
the team working on it had to do consultations with many different
stakeholders. Fraser also explained that even the designs had to be redone
completely on a regular basis as this is also a good way to ensure the security
of the passport and the information that it holds.
Right now, the government of Canada is still transitioning
from the current passport to the newly redesigned one. With that, Gould mentioned that this summer, there are some Canadians who may still be receiving
the old passports. She also mentioned that this should not worry them because
the current passports are still considered to be valid passports and are also
secure, though the new version has been made to be even more secure. But the
current one should still work well and should still keep passport and personal
information safe and secure.
