When COVID-19 was declared by the World Health Organization as a pandemic, one of the very first things that New Zealand did to protect the health and safety of the people on its soil was to close its borders. This is aside from the other things like lockdowns and not allowing any non-essential travel. This move by New Zealand has allowed the country to keep a strong handle on the pandemic and keep the number of cases and deaths low.
However, many things have been put on hold because of the
closed borders and such. Many people who were planning on becoming immigrants
in the country had to put their plans on hold as well since they are not able
to go there. But now that the country has finally reopened its borders, many
people are excited once again to pursue their plans of moving to the country
for whatever purpose they may have. Two groups of individuals have even started
sending in their applications for visas and these are those who are trying to
get student visas and those who are trying to get tourist visas.
The soaring applications for visas
The government of New Zealand has shared that when the
restrictions on their borders finally were lifted, the number of
applications for student visas and tourist visas has soared. Tons of sent in
their applications, which is just a major reflection of how many people have
been waiting for the borders to reopen. They have put their plans on hold, and
they are now ready to do the work needed to be able to make it to the country.
According to the data from the government, New Zealand has
received an increase of 73% in terms of the number of applications received as
compared to the number of applications that the country received before
COVID-19 happened. This could be because of the huge number of people who have
had the time to work on the requirements while the borders were still closed. In
fact, many were prepared to be able to send in their applications right on the
day that the borders were reopened. In fact, over 3500 people did just that.
More information on the applications
For the same period in 2019, applications for student visas
have doubled. For the same period, applications for visitor visas have gone up
by over 70%. Because of the huge amount of applications that have come in,
Immigration New Zealand mentioned that it is committing to processing all
visitor visa applications to New Zealand in just 20 working days. It is
important to keep in mind though that there have been people who wanted to send
in their applications to be able to reunite with their families. However, that
has not been made available yet.
