Understanding The Common Traits Of Canada’s Locals: A Guide For Immigrants

With its long history and its colorful communities, it is not surprising why many people are attracted to Canada. There are those who travel to the country to explore it. And then there are those who ensure that they are able to move to Canada to become immigrants and enjoy what the country has to offer for the rest of their lives.

Many immigrants who have chosen this country to be their new home have a lot of things to take into consideration. They need to learn a lot of things which include public transportation, the culture, the language, and also the food. They also have to learn about the common traits that the locals have. This is very important because immigrants would not be living in a cave in Canada and they would need to interact with the locals daily. Being familiar with the common traits would help them know how to adjust better and not be totally shocked in case some of the traits are totally different from what they practice back in their home countries.

With that, here are some of the common traits that Canadians have.

Patient people.

Many people are surprised to find out that there are still a lot of polite people and most of them live in Canada. Immigrants who have called this country their home start to adopt this trait and they are happy with how calmer they have become. The locals are not always rushing and are often casual. They are also very punctual and expect that others would do the same. The locals may be patient but one should not abuse this. If one is going to be late for a meeting or an appointment, it is best to inform the other party. One should also not be late for over 15 minutes.

Arranging visits.

While there are countries where people can simply just drop by, this is not the case in Canada. When one wants to visit another person’s house, it would be best to arrange such visits with them. That way, the host can be prepared. Arriving there without any prior arrangement is considered to be rude and impolite. If in case one wants to bring another person with them during the visit, it is best to ask the host first if it is okay.

Taking shoes off.

Does one leave their shoes before entering another person’s home? That all depends on the person who owns the home. That is why it is best to ask the host about it.

Having meals at another person’s home.

It is important to understand that when eating at another person’s home in Canada, dishes are often passed around. Each person can get their share of the food before passing it to the next person. If one does not want a certain dish, they can just refuse to get some and then just pass the dish to the next person.
