Canada's Population Surges Breaking The 40 Million Mark As Immigration Takes Center Stage

Canada has been committed to bringing in at least 500,000 new immigrants each year until 2025. With that commitment, the country has been quite active in attracting as many individuals as possible. Canada accelerates meeting immigration goals

 

As per Statistics Canada, hitting the 40-million mark happened faster than the government had expected. Canada was able to bring in around 1.1 new million last year and most of the people from this group were permanent immigrants and temporary immigrants. That is already a milestone for the country as it is more than twice of what the government has planned to bring in. The target number for last year was only 430,000 new individuals.

 

The data also showed that 2022 was the very first year that the population of the country went up by over a million people in just 12 months. This is as per a statement from Statistics Canada. 95.9% of that growth in population was because of the immigration of individuals who came from different countries around the world.

 

In 1997, the population of Canada reached 30 million, and that happened also because of the high immigration levels during that time.

According to Statistics Canada, if the present immigration rate of Canada remains as is, there is a big chance that the population of the country would reach 50 million in 20 years. The agency also disclosed that in 2041, two in every five Canadians could possibly have been born outside the country. At present, Ontario keeps its reputation as the province of Canada that has the most population. It has around 15.6 people. Next in line is Quebec which has around 8.8 million people.

 

Experts have been looking at the data and one of them is a professor of political science at the University of Toronto named Michael Donnelly. As per Donnelly, immigration is very important to Canada for a variety of reasons. One of these is they help with the labor market.
