Immigration Data Reveal More Foreigners Are Making Their Way To New Zealand

Data has shown that more and more foreigners have been making their way to New Zealand recently, and they come in huge numbers. This happened after the country decided to loosen up the rules on immigration with the aim of fixing shortages in the labor market. New Zealand has been riddled with businesses and industries clamoring for more workers to help out with their operations, and this is the government’s way of helping solve the problem.

From the start of the year until the end of April, a record number of 98,391 new individuals entered the country. These individuals are not citizens of New Zealand. The data from Statistics New Zealand also showed that the country had experienced a rise in net immigration to 72,330. This is the biggest amount gained since July 2020.

 

The need for more immigrant workers

 

With the growing number of businesses in the country, it is not a surprise to find that it needs more workers to join the labor market. And New Zealand needs these people as soon as possible. It needs different types of workers, including nurses, doctors, mechanics, engineers, and construction personnel. By having more of them in the country, there would be fewer labor shortages, which has been acerbated when New Zealand closed its borders during the pandemic. Michael Wood is the country’s minister for immigration and he said that the record influx of immigrants to New Zealand is a positive sign that the country is attracting and bringing in the immigrant workers that many businesses in the country need. The industries have been asking the government to help them get the workers they need and that is why the government changed their immigration laws and rules in response to that urgent call.

 

An economist also looked at the data and said that the immigration data shows that many people around the world really want to move to New Zealand and did what they could to meet all the requirements asked by the government. Mary Jo Vergara works as a senior economist at Kiwibank and she continued that she foresees a continuous increase in new immigrants entering the country in the coming months.
