Speaking The Language: A Few Phrases That Can Help Immigrants In Germany Talk To Locals

There are around 100 million Germans all around the world and these people are proud of their language. Well, they are not just proud of their language but they are also quite proud of their rich and colorful history as well. Their language is the most spoken language in Germany as well as in the European Union. It is the official language not only of Germany but also of other countries as well that include Australia, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland. Immigrants who are planning on moving to Germany should try to learn at least some of the basic phrases and sentences in German so they can easily speak with the locals.

With that, here are a few German phrases and sentences that should help immigrants and even tourists be able to get around and get information they need when they are in Germany. Though many locals know how to speak English, they mostly prefer to converse in German. It would also be a great conversation starter, using German to speak with them.

Do you speak German?

People who are in Germany may want to ask other people they meet if they speak German or English. This English phrase, when translated to German, is “Sprichst du Deutsch?” However, if one is addressing a stranger, it should be, “Sprechen Sie Deutsch?”

Good morning!

Greeting people in the morning is a good way to have new friends. To do this, one should say, “Guten morgen!”

Good afternoon!

When meeting people on the street or anywhere else in Germany and there is that need to greet them, one can say, “Guten mittag!”

Good evening!

When it is night time and a person wants to greet a person, he or she can say, “Guten abend!”

Good night!

How does one say “Good night” when they are in Germany? This greeting is translated to German as “Guten nacht!”

Goodbye.

There are two ways of saying goodbye in Germany. It can be an informal one or it can be a formal one. If it is an informal way of saying goodbye, one can say, “Tschüss.” On the other hand, if it is in a formal setting, it would be “Auf wiedersehen.”

Could you please help me?

There are times when immigrants or tourists in Germany may need help from other people. The difficult thing to do is asking people that they need help if they do not know how to say so in German. So just in case, the right thing to say is, “Können Sie mir bitte helfen?”

No, thank you.

Declining offers can happen and to say that properly in German, it should be “Nein, danke.”

Yes, please.

To say yes to something politely in German, one can say, “Ja, bitte.”
